Hire Kotlin Developers

Kotlin stopped being only an Android language some time ago. The same source now compiles for the JVM, for iOS through Kotlin/Native and for the browser, so one team can share business rules between a phone app and the server behind it. That reach is also where projects go wrong: a shared module the iOS engineers cannot debug, or coroutines that leak because nobody owns their scope.

A Kotlin developer from our team joins your codebase and your review process and is managed by you. We look after the employment side, the workstation and the cover. Questions go straight to the engineer.

The work

Where a Kotlin specialist earns their place

Kotlin work splits between phones, servers and the build system. These are the six requests we expect most.

  1. Kotlin Multiplatform shared modules

Networking, persistence and validation written once in common code, consumed by the Android app directly and by the iOS app as a framework. We keep the Swift-facing API small and readable, because that is what decides whether iOS engineers accept it.

  2. Server-side Kotlin

HTTP services in Ktor or Spring Boot, with suspending handlers, typed request and response models, database access through Exposed or JPA, and health checks your platform can probe.

  3. Java to Kotlin conversion

Converting file by file inside a working project. The automatic converter is only the start: nullability has to be decided, platform types removed, and annotations such as @JvmStatic added so remaining Java callers still compile.

  4. Coroutine and Flow repair

Finding work launched in GlobalScope, blocking calls on the wrong dispatcher, swallowed cancellation and flows collected after the screen has gone. Fixes come with tests written on the coroutine test dispatcher.

  5. Gradle build work

Moving Groovy scripts to the Kotlin DSL, introducing version catalogs and convention plugins, replacing kapt with KSP, and upgrading to the K2 compiler. Build times are measured before and after.

  6. Compose Multiplatform interfaces

Shared UI for Android, iOS and desktop where the screens are the same on each. Where a platform has its own conventions, that screen stays native and calls the shared logic underneath.

What surrounds the Kotlin language

The language is compact; the ecosystem is wide. A Kotlin engineer should be at ease with most of the following.

Seniority

Three Kotlin levels and the tasks that fit each

Kotlin lets you write the same thing five ways. Experience shows in choosing the plain one and in knowing what the compiler generates underneath.

Junior

Writes data classes, extension functions and simple suspending calls inside patterns that already exist. Fixes reproducible bugs and adds unit tests. Needs review, especially around coroutine scopes.

Choose when: an experienced Kotlin or Java engineer in your team reviews every change.

Mid-level

Builds a complete endpoint or shared module with tests. Uses sealed types, Flow operators and structured concurrency correctly, and keeps Java interoperability in mind.

Choose when: the architecture is fixed and the work is a steady stream of features.

Senior

Decides what belongs in shared code and what stays native, designs the threading model, plans compiler and Gradle upgrades, and explains the trade-offs to the iOS and backend teams.

Choose when: you are adopting Kotlin Multiplatform, leaving Java behind, or have no Kotlin lead of your own.

Getting started

Getting a Kotlin developer onto your project

  1. Explain the codebase

Let us know the targets involved (Android, iOS, JVM server), the Kotlin and Gradle versions, and the job to be done. Repository access is the quickest way to an accurate answer.

  2. Interview the person we propose

You get the profile of a single engineer and hold the conversation with them directly. If you are not convinced, we offer an alternative.

  3. Agree a short opening task

A converted module, one endpoint or one coroutine bug is enough. The result lets you assess the work before you commit further.

  4. Run week by week

The engineer follows your branching and review rules. We send a weekly note of what was merged and what is waiting, and bill monthly in one invoice.

Straight talk

Is a Kotlin engineer from us the right call?

We are a good choice when

  • You maintain Android and iOS apps and want to stop writing the same logic twice.
  • Your backend is on the JVM and the team wants Kotlin without a rewrite.
  • You need someone who can speak to both mobile and server engineers.
  • You want to manage the developer yourself, inside your own tools.

Look elsewhere when

  • You only need a quick opinion on one pull request.
  • Your iOS team has already ruled out shared code and the decision is final.
  • You expect a fixed bid on a migration nobody has measured yet.
  • There can be no common working hours between your team and India.
Questions

Kotlin questions worth settling early

Is Kotlin Multiplatform ready for production?

Yes. JetBrains declared it stable and Google supports it for sharing logic between Android and iOS. Compose Multiplatform for iOS is stable as well, although sharing logic first and UI later is the lower-risk order.

Do our iOS developers have to learn Kotlin?

Not to use the shared module. They receive a framework with Swift-callable types. They will need to read Kotlin when debugging, which is why we keep the public surface narrow and document it.

Can Kotlin and Java live in the same project?

They can, for as long as you like. Both compile to JVM bytecode and call each other directly, so a conversion can stop at any point and the application still builds and runs.

Ktor or Spring Boot for a new service?

Ktor is light and built around coroutines, which suits small services and teams that want little hidden behaviour. Spring Boot brings a large set of integrations and is the safer choice where the organisation already runs Spring.

Can we start part-time?

Yes. The smallest arrangement is a retainer of 40 hours a month, and the hours can be raised to full-time when the workload justifies it.

What if the engineer becomes unavailable?

We find a successor and put that person to you for approval. The code is in your repository and decisions are written down as they are made, so the handover does not depend on one memory.
